Wind Chime
Care and Replacement Strings |
Where can I find replacement
strings?
A lot of our customers ask us about replacement string for wind
chimes. We do not offer replacement string for two reasons.
The main reason being that most of our wind chime manufacturers offer
restringing of most of their wind chimes. Secondly, while at first it
might seem simple to make or restring wind chimes, the wind chimes we sell
are all specifically tuned and that tuning is largely controlled by the
way the tubes are hung. There are many complex calculations that go
into the construction of a chime, including the point at which the striker
comes into contact with the tube. Varying the length of string will change
the tone and quality of sound that your wind chime produces. We have a
list below of the links on our manufacturers pages that tell you about
re-stringing.
Where can I find string for re-stringing?
Should you decide to re-string your wind chimes yourself. We
recommend using polyester fiber string to do so. Synthetic string is less
likely to fray from the weight and wear of the tubes and will last much
longer under exposure to the elements. You can find good quality polyester
string at archery supply stores and some sporting goods stores. You
can use high load rated fishing line if you wish but if you can find the
stronger synthetic polyester fiber fishing string it will last longer.
How do I repair my chime?
The wind chimes we sell are hung in a balanced formation in one of two
ways. Some are hung where the tubes are balanced in the middle.
Otherwise they are hung where the balance in in the specific length of the
tube, which means that the top of the tubes are at an equal height. It is
important to hang the tubes back at the same position they were in before
or you will change the pitch or resonance or both of the wind chime. You
should get the string tied with a temporary knot that can be easily
removed in case it happens to be fastened at the wrong length. Once you
feel that you have the tube in the correct place, secure the knot so that
it will not slip.
How to keep your wind chime from damage?
Most of our wind chimes have been tested in high winds. Even so,
it's best to hang them in a safe place, away from objects that can hit
them or vice versa. Secure them well to your chosen location.
If hanging under eaves it is best to use a well secured hook so the wind
chime does not work the hook loose. Another, and maybe better, way
it to use a wind chime hanger attached to the side of the house to hang
your wind chime. If hanging from a tree make sure they are located
high enough to keep from hitting your head and also away from other
swaying branches that could come in contact with your wind chimes.
The best way on a tree branch is to use a strong, thick plastic tie wrap
to hang your wind chime from. Use the nylon variety instead of the
plain plastic type as they will last longer. We don't recommend
hanging your wind chimes from a rope or string as this creates a pendulum
effect that will greatly reduce your enjoyment of your new chimes.
How do I maintain my wind chimes?
For the metal, glass or plastic parts, just use soap and water when
needed, and occasionally clean inside the tubes with a pressurized water
hose to clear out spider webs and wasp nests. For the wooden parts,
periodically apply a thin layer of Danish or lemon oil with a clean cloth.
Regular oiling will help protect the wood and retard the natural aging
process. For the metal parts use gun oil or a good silicone once a
year to protect them. Never use steel wool to clean the metal parts. For brass parts use a good brass polish to clean them up
